Homemade BBQ Sauce

In my quest to please the BBQ sauce loving person in our home (because saying I wanted to please ‘my man’ with homemade BBQ sauce made my brain slightly implode and ideas of feminist revolt started to trickle in. But it’s true, so. Lawd BBQ sauce is complicated), and satisfy my desire to make my own condiments from scratch; I came up with this smokey, sexy sauce business.

It may boast a quick due-date, because it’s missing the bucket loads of sodium and preservatives that make the shelf life of the condiments we can’t seem to live without, last forever. (Think about that for a sec.) But it’s dang tasty and passed the, Mr. Picky-give-me-name-brand-cull-of-preservatives-ONLY, taste test.  It’s easy to make (with or without the smoke), freezes well and can be eaten with a multitude of spring and summer dishes. 

Homemade BBQ Sauce Ingredients

WHAT YOU’LL NEED: (Double Batch here folks, enough for 2 pint sized mason jars)

  • 1/4 cup of pure maple syrup (amber preferred, more to preferred sweetness if you want)
  • 2  cups diced plum tomatoes, pureed
  • 1 can of organic tomato paste
  • 3/4 cup Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp. all natural liquid smoke
  • 1 tsp. cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp. cumin
  • 3 tsp. ground mustard (or bottled)
  • 3 teaspoons paprika
  • 1/2 tsp. pink Himalayan sea salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp. black pepper

HOW YOU DO:  Puree the diced plum tomatoes, (canned is fine, but you can use fresh too!) adding in the tomato paste.  Add in the rest of your ingredients and continue blending. That’s it! Pretty simple, yea? Make a double batch (of the double batch, HA!) and freeze some for down the road.

There are all sorts of beautiful things you can eat this BBQ sauce with.  Clearly this BBQ sauce is made for pulled pork or turkey or chicken and ribs. Or on a seriously stacked hemp turkey or bison burger. A really simple idea? BBQ chicken breast on a bun or salad. A fast dinner that little (and big) ones gobble up. I love that I can add other spices to whatever meat (or veg), dish I am making, adding in more heat as I so wish. Try it out and let me know how you like it!

    Nice recipe. I tweaked it slightly and added some Allspice to the mixture. I only had one can of tomato paste, so I had to use some corn starch to thicken it a little. And I cooked the sauce at a low boil for 15 minutes before refrigerating the sauce.

        Selena, I used it with some grilled chicken. It got good reviews, but my wife thinks it’s a little sweet. So I plan to tweak the recipe a little more…. maybe cut back on the maple syrup, and add something like ground cloves to ground the sauce a little.

          Yes, a lot of my recipes are made with picky toddlers in mind. I like that my partner and I can add some heat to the sauce for us – but for now things have to be a little more tame, a little more sweet if I want my toddlers to eat it! And yet still, many would call me adventurous in regard to what i feed my kids!
